“What makes a Christian?”

One of the primary displays of Christian faith is godly activity (faith without works is dead, James 2:20). In order for the Christian to accomplish her duty, she must first understand the assignment given her by God. Where would such a one find this assignment to act upon it in good faith?

Let’s start with the B-I-B-L-E.

Reading the Bible is the beginning of good faith practice. It is Christianity 101, cultivating basic beliefs for all who wish to follow Christ. Being rightly understood as a love letter from God and displaying His redemptive plan from Genesis to Revelation, Messiah takes center stage in the great story of coming to know God, His sacrificial love for all mankind and His eternal purpose for His creation. Many who commit to reading it regularly, even annually, find they are blessed by the practice and emboldened in their expression of faith.

As the calendar flips to February, my Bible reading plan turns to Leviticus. I’m using The Bible Project this year to guide the way, using their video illustrations and summaries of the different books as we go along. All of this is nicely incorporated into the YouVersion Bible APP that is easily downloaded onto a smart phone or tablet.

For Christians who TRAIN for the Christian life, the Bible becomes the standard by which all faithful actions arise. Students of the Word should have great impact on their world. Our faith practice begins with the foundation of the faithful practice of studying God’s Word, reading it and applying it to life.

Learning how to rightly apply what we read is for another lesson, but for February 1 and Leviticus 1, I’m working on building a habit of holiness that governs itself around the reading of God’s Holy Word. Join me in this wonderful pursuit!
